Inverness - The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum will be hosting a free public program in their Coffee & Conversation Speaker Series. On Thursday, April 8th, 2010, at 3:00 p.m., Nicole Tumbleson, the Outreach Coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN), will present Grave Insights: Techniques for Preserving Our Historic Cemeteries.

Cemeteries are an important feature of Florida’s rich and diverse heritage. As historic cemeteries continue to disappear from the landscape through both natural and human forces a growing awareness of the importance of preservation has arisen.  These heritage sites are important to our history because each cemetery contains information about burial customs, funerary art, and architecture.  The resting places of many of Florida’s founders provide important information about our state's social, religious, artistic, and cultural heritage. They also contain genealogical information that cannot be replaced.  This presentation will explore the types of information that can be gained from historic cemeteries and ways in which these sites can be preserved for future generations.

Ms. Tumbleson is a Maritime Archaeologist currently working as the Outreach   Coordinator for the Central Regional Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) in Crystal River.  She received her BA from the University of Florida and is completing her Master's degree through the University of West Florida.  Since 2002, she has participated in a diverse number of terrestrial and underwater field projects such as 16th century Spanish vessels, Civil War blockade runners and blockade vessels, and numerous 19th ship loss sites throughout Florida.  FPAN is dedicated to educating the public about the preservation of historical and archaeological resources throughout the State.

Coffee and light refreshments will be served. For further information or to reserve your seat at this session, contact Kathy Turner Thompson at (352) 341-6436.
